Week 1 Post
I’m Aaliyah Jordan, a 1st year softball player from San Diego, California. I've grown up in in an environment of art and not science. My grandparents are very religious and have taught us to side more with Religion and not science. Growing up I bought into the idea of religion and never really questioned that because I trusted my grandparents and my family. I was very separated from science and never thought about it. Like humanities and science, my life has been very separated from softball and school. I've played softball since I was 4 years old and it's always been school on the weekdays and softball on the weekends. The two never really conflicted with each other or influenced one another because they were two separate aspects of my life and I never saw them as the same. Once I got to UCLA that changed dramatically for both seeing the split between humanities and science and also seeing them together.

At UCLA I've noticed the difference between North campus majors and South campus majors, depicted in the second. Bruin walk, which is depicted in the first picture, is what seemed to separate the campus from North and South campus. C.P. Snow suggested how teachers are the problem with the division of the two and at UCLA we see that between the division of the campus. When I first got here, most of my classes were in the North side of campus and I never got to experience the South campus until this quarter. This was the first time I saw the major split between Humanities and Science. Like humanities and science, once I got to UCLA’s softball program, depicted in the third photo, I was able to see the split between the different types of people based on the their major. I noticed how the science major players put their academics first and focused less on softball and the opposite for humanities majors. But also by being here at UCLA, like technology for the two cultures, I’ve been able to see many people who associate themselves with both cultures and also the clash between the two different cultures from people.

Coming from an athletic stand point I totally agree with south campus majors vs. the north campus majors. There aren't very many student athletes who are south campus majors. They do put more of their time into school rather than the sport compared to the north campus majors. I also agree that the technology allows for both cultures to mesh together.
ReplyDeleteI would agree with Rachel and yourself as well. As an athlete, one or the other tends to be more important. With the use of technology, a collaboration has been enabled for both of these cultures to correlate which helps the people coexist in both worlds.
